What is a Deltarune sprite maker?

A Deltarune sprite maker is a tool for turning your own artwork into the small, crisp pixel style that fans associate with Deltarune and Undertale. Those games use low-resolution characters with a limited set of colors and clear dark outlines, so a sprite still reads at a glance when it is only a few dozen pixels tall. Drawing that by hand pixel by pixel takes practice. This tool gives you a fast first version you can then refine in any pixel editor.

The workshop above does four things to your image. It shrinks it to the sprite height you choose, reduces it to a limited palette, removes a plain background so the sprite sits on transparency, and adds a one-pixel outline around the shape. The result is drawn at a whole-number scale, so every pixel stays a perfect square instead of turning soft and blurry. Everything happens in your browser; the image you upload never leaves your device.

How to make a Deltarune-style sprite

  1. Start with a clean image. A character on a plain white or single-color background converts best. A cropped drawing works better than a full scene.
  2. Upload, drop or paste it. Click the box, drag a file onto it, or press Ctrl+V after copying an image. You can also try the built-in sample character first.
  3. Set the sprite height. 32 to 64 pixels suits a small overworld character. 96 to 128 pixels keeps more detail for a portrait or a larger battle-style sprite.
  4. Limit the palette. Fewer colors give a bolder, more retro look. Eight to sixteen colors is a good range for most characters.
  5. Clean the background. Keep Remove background on and raise the tolerance until the backdrop disappears without eating into the character.
  6. Outline and export. Leave the outline on for a game-like silhouette, choose an export scale, and download the PNG.

Deltarune sprite maker settings explained

Sprite height

This is the real pixel height of the sprite before scaling. Width follows the original image's proportions. Smaller sprites look more like overworld characters; taller ones keep facial detail.

Palette colors

The tool groups similar colors together and replaces each pixel with the closest group color. Lower numbers flatten shading into clear bands, which is typical of retro sprites.

Background removal

The color in the top-left corner is treated as the background. Every pixel within the tolerance of that color becomes transparent, so plain backgrounds work best.

Outline and scale

The outline adds a single pixel border around every visible area. Export scale enlarges the finished sprite by a whole number so it stays sharp on social media and in videos.

Tips for a sprite that looks like it belongs in the Dark World

Strong silhouettes matter more than detail at small sizes. Before converting, simplify the drawing: thicken thin limbs, remove tiny accessories that would shrink to a single noisy pixel, and make the head a little larger than realistic proportions. Deltarune characters often have exaggerated shapes, which is part of why they read so clearly.

Keep contrast high between the character and its outline. A very dark outline around light clothing gives the classic look, while a dark-blue or purple outline can feel softer and fit the Dark World's colors. Try the outline color picker if pure black feels too harsh for your design.

Finally, treat the export as a draft. Open it in a pixel editor at the ×1 size, clean any stray pixels around the eyes and hands, and add one or two highlight pixels by hand. Small manual touches turn an automatic conversion into something that looks deliberately drawn.

What to do with your Deltarune sprite

A finished sprite is useful in many fan projects. Drop it into a fan comic or a video thumbnail, use it as an avatar, or place it in a fan game built with a common pixel-art engine. Pair it with a line of dialogue from the Deltarune dialogue generator, give your original character a name with the Deltarune name generator, or feature it inside a stained-glass style panel with the Deltarune Prophecy Generator. If you are curious about the real panels that inspired that tool, the Deltarune prophecy panels guide walks through every glass tapestry in Chapter 4.

Remember that this is an unofficial fan tool. It converts your own art into a pixel style and does not include official game assets. The official Deltarune website is the reliable reference for the game itself.

Common sprite maker problems and how to fix them

  • The background will not disappear. The tool samples the top-left corner, so make sure that corner shows the background and not part of the character. Crop the image if needed, then raise the tolerance a little at a time.
  • Parts of the character vanish. If the character shares a color with the background, such as white clothes on a white backdrop, lower the tolerance or place the drawing on a contrasting color before converting.
  • The face turns into a smudge. Small sprites cannot hold fine detail. Increase the sprite height, or simplify the eyes and mouth in the original drawing so they survive the reduction.
  • The colors look muddy. Too few palette colors merge different areas together. Add a few colors, or boost the contrast of the source image first.
  • The outline is missing in places. The outline is only drawn on transparent pixels next to the sprite, so it needs background removal to work. Turn background removal on, or use an image that already has a transparent background.

Deltarune sprite maker FAQ

Is this Deltarune sprite maker free?

Yes. The sprite maker runs entirely in your browser. Your image is never uploaded, and there is no account or watermark.

What size should a Deltarune-style sprite be?

Small overworld characters read well at around 32 to 64 pixels tall. Use a larger height such as 96 or 128 pixels for portraits or detailed battle-style sprites.

Why does my sprite look blurry when I upload it somewhere?

Pixel art blurs when another app scales it with smoothing. Export at a larger integer scale such as ×4 or ×8 so the pixels stay sharp after uploading.

How do I remove the background?

Turn on Remove background. The tool makes the colour in the top-left corner transparent, along with similar colours within the tolerance you set, so it works best on images with a plain background.

Can I make official Deltarune sprites with this tool?

No. This is an unofficial fan tool that converts your own artwork into a pixel style. It does not contain or recreate official game sprites.
